Why KYC Is Mandatory and Not Optional
Regulated trading platforms operating in the EU are subject to the Anti-Money Laundering Directive, which requires them to verify the identity of every client before processing withdrawals. This requirement exists regardless of the platform's size, the client's country of origin, or the amount being withdrawn. A platform that skips identity verification entirely is either operating outside the regulated framework or has not yet processed a withdrawal for the account in question — the requirement activates before the first withdrawal, not before the first deposit. Knowing this in advance removes any confusion about why a platform that accepted your deposit immediately is now asking for documents before releasing funds.
What Documents Are Typically Required
Standard KYC documentation falls into two categories: identity verification and address verification. For identity, a government-issued photo document is required — a passport or national identity card is universally accepted; a driving licence is accepted by most but not all platforms. For address verification, a document issued within the past three months that shows your name and current address is required — a bank statement, a utility bill, or a government correspondence letter are the most commonly accepted formats. Some platforms also request a selfie photograph alongside the identity document to confirm the document belongs to the person submitting it. Preparing both document types before registration shortens the verification window materially.
Enhanced Due Diligence and When It Applies
For higher-value accounts or accounts associated with politically exposed persons, platforms are required under AML rules to conduct enhanced due diligence — a more detailed verification process that may include questions about the source of funds and the source of wealth. This is not a sign that something is wrong; it is a proportionate regulatory response to higher-risk account profiles. If your account is flagged for enhanced due diligence, the documentation requested will go beyond the standard identity and address check. Responding promptly and completely to those requests is the fastest path to a resolved account status. Delays in the enhanced due diligence process are most commonly caused by incomplete responses, not by platform processing times.
